Learn Roller Skating Skills This September: Drills, Spins & Choreography
Hi skaters! Happy September!
It may feel like fall already with the kids heading back to school, but (surprise!) it’s still summer for a few more weeks. With pumpkin spice back and Halloween just around the corner, now is a great time to set fresh goals and commit to moving your body. Plus, school starting means extra space and time to roller skate outside!
If you're new here, hi! I’m Nicole Fiore, 4-time World Champion artistic roller skater, coach, and choreographer. Through my Roll With Me Membership, I teach skaters all over the world how to learn roller skating step by step, gain confidence, and have fun. The membership is available at ThatNicoleFiore.com or on YouTube.
In the Site Membership, everything is displayed on its own page and you can track your progress throughout each section! You can check out all of the drills here, skills here, and choreography here!
Each month I highlight a few roller skating drills, skills, and choreography routines for you to focus on. Let’s dive into what to practice this September!
Roller Skating Drill: Strengthen Your Free Leg and Balance
We always start with roller skating drills, because strong fundamentals are everything! This month’s focus is on building control and balance with your free leg. Think of your free leg like as weight (because it is - your skate is heavy) and you’re weight lifting every time you move it.
Inside the membership, you’ll find short, repeatable videos (both on-skates drills and off-skates drills) that you can practice daily or weekly to improve balance, stability, and strength.
Video length: 17 minutes, 33 seconds

Roller Skating Skill: Mastering Toe Stop Spins
This month’s skill is the toe stop spin. Many skaters find spins intimidating, but that doesn’t need to be the case. For a toe stop spin, you don’t balance solely on the toe stop. You use your toe wheels to balance too, forming a sort of tripod for extra stability.
You can do them bent, upright, or with your free leg extended. They’re versatile, beautiful, and perfect for practicing in small spaces. If you don’t normally wear toe stops, I highly recommend trying them, especially for skating outdoors. So much safer!
Video length: 26 minutes, 28 seconds

Choreography: Thunderstruck by AC/DC
It’s football season, which makes this month’s choreography extra fun! We’re skating to Thunderstruck by AC/DC, inspired by the legendary Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders.
There are two versions to match your level:
Beginner/ Intermediate: Focuses on posing, long lines, and balance.
Advanced: Uses toe stop spins (but you can substitute pivots if you prefer).
Choreography is one of the best ways to practice roller skating because it combines drills, skills, and artistry into a complete routine. Start with the beginner/ intermediate version, then move into advanced when you feel ready. By the end of the month, you’ll have a full performance to celebrate your progress!
Beginner/ Intermediate video length: 20 minutes, 44 seconds [Link: Website, Link provided in Membership post]
Advanced video length: 18 minutes, 18 seconds [Link: Website, Link provided in Membership post]
Workshops, Lessons & Progress:
September’s workshop is sold out!!! However, October-December are still available! Check out the workshop options here!
Make sure you send your progress to me throughout the month. I know that recording yourself can be a little scary, but I promise that when you look back at your videos six months, a year, five years from now, you are going to be amazed at how far you've come. All of the little things add up over time!
