What to Practice This Month
April 2025
Happy Spring!! It’s the perfect time to skate!
If you’re new here, hello! My name is Nicole Fiore and I am a 4-time World Champion artistic roller skater, coach, and choreographer. I have been skating for my entire life and teaching for about 15 years. I created the Roll With Me Membership in 2020 and have been growing it ever since. It now has hundreds of videos to learn from, for all levels, from anywhere in the world…
Because there are so many videos to choose from, each month I give you a few things to focus on to help guide your practice! If you don’t have access already, you can get a membership at ThatNicoleFiore.com or on my YouTube Channel. Although both Memberships contain the same content, they are separate. With the Site Membership, everything is displayed on its own page and you can track your progress throughout each section! You can check out all of the drills here, skills here, and choreography here! Keep reading to see what I recommend for this month…Happy Skating ♥️
Drills, skills, choreography, and so much more!! This membership contains over 200 Tutorials with more added regularly. Drills are created to strengthen specific muscles for skating and skills are labeled by level to make learning accessible for all levels. Choreography is available in Beginner/ Intermediate as well as Advanced and can be done on or off skates!
Drill: Toe Stop Balance
Our drill for this month is going to be on toe stop balance! If you are not comfortable on your toe stops yet, this will be super helpful. And if you’re already comfortable on your toe stops, this will be a great workout!
When using our toe stops for balance, the biggest thing to remember is that your wheels are right there and they want to roll. We have to really concentrate on keeping our hips back and our weight a bit forward so that we don't hit those wheels. These drills will be very helpful in gaining control and balance so that when you want to do things like toe stop strutting, dancing, and spinning on your toe stops, you know exactly where to put your weight.
Ps. I recently posted a video on YouTube about toe stop height that you can check out here.
Video length: 17 minutes, 15 seconds

Skill: Barrel Roll
We have a brand new skill this month called the Barrel Roll! The barrel roll is a series of edges and transitions to rotate in a circle. You can do this in either direction and use it to go around a corner or as a fun dance move! It's a fairly simple skill because it’s really a practice in transferring weight. We will get into what rotations/ transitions you're technically doing and then find the flow within it to make it a casual move that you can do pretty much anywhere.
Video length: 9 minutes, 31 seconds

Choreography: Pour Some Sugar On Me
We have a super fun one this month (I think it’s fun every month though)… “Pour Some Sugar On Me" by Def Leppard. There are a ton of different skills within this choreography and I will list them below with their links so you can check those out if you wish! Though there are a lot of skills used in this choreography, this is a pretty easy one to learn. It's a bit slower which gives you time to transfer your weight between each step.
I always have a beginner/ intermediate piece of choreography as well as an advanced and this one flows directly from one to the other. If done back to back, you have a full routine! I recommend looking at both videos no matter what level you are. You might be shocked at what you can learn and what you can develop just by looking ahead at what’s to come for your learning and abilities.
We will be working on simple skills in the beginner/ intermediate and then make them more challenging in the advanced. We will be working on a 3-turn, doing a quarter turn in the beg/int. Going back to our skills practiced in our drill, we will be balancing on our toe stops, doing a fan kick in the advanced. So, we have some flexibility work to look forward to this month as well!
Beginner/ Intermediate video length: 39 minutes, 47 seconds [Link: Website, YouTube]

Make sure you send your progress to me throughout the month and especially throughout the year. I know that recording yourself can be a little scary, but I promise you that when you look back at your videos six months, a year, five years later, you are going to be amazed at how far you've come. All of the little things add up over time!
